How AI is reshaping SEO in 2025
March 10, 2026
Search has fundamentally changed. Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT now synthesize answers directly — the traditional "rank #1 and get clicks" model is eroding fast.
What's actually happening
When a user asks "best CRM for small business", they no longer see ten blue links. They see a synthesized paragraph citing three or four sources. Your job is to be one of those sources — not to rank on page one.
This shift rewards authority signals over keyword density. The models pulling from the web are looking for:
- Clear, opinionated answers to specific questions
- Structured content (headers, lists, definitions)
- High citation counts from credible external sources
- Entities (people, companies, products) mentioned in relation to your brand
What to stop doing
Stop optimizing for a keyword ranking that no longer drives clicks at the same rate. Stop producing thin "what is X" articles designed to match search intent with minimal effort. The models have already ingested better versions of those.
What to start doing
Write for the model, not the SERP. That means publishing content that is:
Specific — answer a precise question completely, not broadly Citable — include data, quotes, and structured claims Opinionated — take a position, models prefer authoritative voices over hedging
Entity optimization matters more than ever. Make sure your brand, your team, and your core offerings appear consistently across owned and earned channels so models build a coherent picture of who you are.
The AEO layer
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the emerging practice of structuring content so it gets pulled into AI-generated answers. This means:
- Using
FAQschema on pages that answer questions - Writing in direct answer format (question → immediate answer → supporting detail)
- Getting mentioned in high-authority sources that models heavily weight
The SEO game isn't dead — it's just harder, and the bar is higher. The businesses investing in genuine expertise and content quality now will own the AI answer layer for the next decade.
